The Devil’s Punchbowl Waterfall, nestled in Arthur’s Pass, New Zealand, offers a brief and rewarding trek to a picturesque cascade.
This easily accessible waterfall should not be missed as you pass through Arthur’s Pass. Situated on the South Island of New Zealand, the Devil’s Punchbowl Waterfall’s trailhead begins by the Bealey River, and a dedicated car park with ample space is available.
If you’re embarking on your journey from Christchurch, you can reach Devil’s Punchbowl Falls with a manageable 2-hour drive.
The hike to Devil’s Punchbowl Waterfall is a short and moderately steep ascent through a beech forest, involving around 200 steps. Despite the climb, it’s considered an easy trek, and you can reach the falls in under 30 minutes.
A viewing platform provides a perspective of the falls from the creek, or you can opt to follow the path all the way up to the waterfall’s base (recommended) for a more immersive experience.
Standing at an impressive 130 meters in height (425 feet), the waterfall maintains a strong flow throughout the year. For the best photographic opportunities, visit in the morning, ideally around 9-10 AM, before the sun becomes too harsh.
During our February visit, we encountered only a few fellow hikers on the trail. There’s also a decent chance of spotting Kea or Kiwi birds during your exploration.
Many itineraries exploring New Zealand’s South Island pass through Arthur’s Pass en route to Christchurch, making this an effortless addition to your travel plans!
